Spirit Burns

To launch Spirit Burns, which was published on International Women’s Day 2023, I wrote this piece about Disorderly Women. And there’s a Disorderly Women t-shirt to go with it.

Fahrenheit Press released these this glorious book trailer and this one too. And because Fahrenheit is the most rock’n’roll publisher on Earth, there’s also… Spirit Burns merch! There are Nevertheless They Persisted t-shirts featuring the Spirit Burns cover, and a print of the beautiful cover design, which was illustrated by Fahrenheit’s head honcho himself, Mister Chris McVeigh.

The Beloved Children

CrimeSquad featured The Beloved Children as its Fresh Blood pick for February and March 2021. This is particularly exciting because TBC was selected by the Queen of Noir Cathi Unsworth, who reviewed the book and interviewed me. You can read it here.

I wrote a feature for the March issue of Writing Magazine about the writing process of The Beloved Children.

The Beloved Children was launched on 4 December with an interview for Hull Noir with Nick Triplow. You can watch the interview here.

I was interviewed about The Beloved Children by Michaela Noonan for Standard Issue on 2 December. You can listen to the podcast here.

I wrote this piece, One of Us, about secrets, concealment, outsiders and Tod Browning’s Freaks for Fahrenheit Press. You can read it here.

What reviewers are saying about The Beloved Children:

Yvonne Coppard: Reviews by Writers: ‘Jackson embraces the magic of theatre and circus: she plays with both in a way that recalls Angela Carter’s gift for magic realism… This is a book to read twice. Let the first reading sweep you into Jackson’s mesmerising real-but-not-real world. And then read it again to see how she does it: storytelling at its best.’ You can read the full review here.

Kitty Marlow: Best New Fiction, the Mail on Sunday: ‘This gloriously offbeat tale has shades of Angela Carter, with beguiling characters weaving a magical spell.’ You can read the full review here.

Ben East, the Observer: ‘There is some really atmospheric storytelling and joyful language at play here, with Jackson as an entertaining mistress of ceremonies.’

Nick Triplow, author of Getting Carter: Ted Lewis and the Birth of Brit-Noir and Frank’s Wild Years, who described The Beloved Children as ‘carny noir’: ‘Who wouldn’t want to spend time around the fire in the company of these wonderful, crazy, naughty, knowing, flawed, soulful people?’

Paul Steven Stone, author of Souljourner: ‘The Beloved Children is magic realism at its most daring and accomplished. And Tina Jackson a literary prestidigitator of the highest order.’
Read Beyond the Curtain Lies Magic and Enchantment, Paul’s full review, here.

Karen Mace, Books and Me: ‘What a special little book this turned out to be! I’m always delighted to find a little gem of a story and if you’re looking for something that’s a little bit magical, emotional, funny and imaginative then look no further. One of my books of 2020!! Glorious stuff!!’ (Five stars)

Marcus Von Cudworth, MVC Studios: ‘It sparkles like dirty diamanté in a dingy junk shop.’

Crime star Richard Cox, author (as Tony R Cox) of Vinyl Junkie and A Fatal Drug:The Beloved Children is skilfully crafted and delights with every page, every character, every action and a plot that trips the light fantastic with the touch of a master wordsmith.’ You can read the full five-star review here.

Amazon reviewer: ‘This is a truly wonderful novel, full of colours and textures and layers. Genuinely funny, surprising and uplifting with some hair-raising moments too. Masterful use of language – reminded me of Angela Carter in places. I finished it and just wanted to read it again straight away. A real tour de force.’

Amazon reviewer: ‘Absolutely enthralling and joyful from beginning to end. Glorious characters and completely captivating. I became completely lost in this magical tale.
